A quiet Hackney brief, executed properly
Earlier this month we wrapped one of our favourite recent projects: a full bedroom transformation on Ben Street in Hackney, working alongside the talented interior designer Anna. The brief was deceptively simple — a calmer, more grown-up bedroom in a busy family home — but the route to that finish ran through several days of careful preparation before a single coat of paint was applied.
Working with a designer: where prep does the heavy lifting
Designer-led projects live or die on the prep. Anna had specified a soft, considered finish in Coat paint — a British, water-based, low-VOC brand whose pigment depth is unforgiving of imperfect substrate. That meant the walls, ceiling and woodwork had to be flawless before colour went on.
Our team spent the opening days:
- Filling every nail-hole, plaster crack and cornicing chip with the appropriate filler — flexible for movement cracks, fine surface filler for cosmetic blemishes
- Sanding back the full room — walls, woodwork, skirtings and architraves
- Cleaning down with sugar soap to remove any residue
- Spot-priming any patched areas with an appropriate adhesion primer so the Coat topcoats would sit evenly across old and new surfaces
Why Coat paint suited this Hackney bedroom
Coat is not the cheapest emulsion on the shelf, but it is one of the cleanest. For a bedroom — particularly a family bedroom where children sleep — the low-VOC, water-based formula is a sensible specification. The flat matt finish in particular has a beautiful chalky depth that flatters period proportions, and the brand's curated palette makes designer-led colour choices straightforward.
Two coats over a primed substrate gave us full, even coverage with no patchiness or roller tracks. Woodwork was finished separately in Coat's eggshell for a hard-wearing trim that contrasts subtly with the wall colour.
The finish — and why it matters
You can see the result in the video above. The room reads as a single, calm volume. There are no harsh cut-lines between wall and ceiling, no visible filler patches behind the new colour, no missed bits in the corners behind the door. That standard of finish only comes from two things: the right preparation, and a small in-house team who own the job from quote to walk-around.
It is exactly what we mean when we say no subcontracting — Anna briefed the same painters who finished the room, and there was no telephone game in between.
